Frequently Asked Questions

1. How long do we have to wait to make an appointment?

Generally, appointments can be arranged within a week's time. If there is some urgency, we always do our best to accommodate these requests quickly.

2. What does an assessment involve?

An assessment involves the use of standardized tests that measure the individuals' abilities, skills and sense of self. Depending on the questions asked, a number of different instruments are used, along with qualitative information gathered by the Psychologist during the sessions to understand the reasons for the difficulties that are identified. Usually, a formal assessment will take from 10 – 12 hours to complete, including doing the tests, analyzing the tests, reporting results and the completion of a report. Often, testing for specific issues (e.g. ADHD) can be completed in much less time.

Results are analyzed and then reported to the child/adolescent/young aAdult and their family in a comprehensible and functional manner. A written report follows this meeting and is usually available in a week's time. Depending on the testing involved, the whole process can be completed in about 2 week's time.

3. What about treatments for other issues?

Consultation appointments usually involve meeting for a session with the client and their family (where appropriate). At that point a decision is made about how to proceed with further treatment. Different strategies are used to respond to the presenting issues. At times, individual sessions are set up, or, at other times, clients are seen with their families. Treatment goals are always outlined at the onset and an evaluatory process is used to monitor ongoing therapies.
